About Marya Grathwohl

Marya was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and grew up in the city. Her commitment to living in a mutually enhancing relationship with Earth began with her parents’ respect for and knowledge of the natural world. Her father was a backyard organic gardener; her mother raised flowers and canned the vegetables.

A Sister of St. Francis since 1963, Marya has been a teacher, administrator, and adult educator. She has been speaking, facilitating workshops, and giving retreats for over twenty years. In 1974, she moved to the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Reservations in Montana in 1974 where she was welcomed into the ceremonies and traditions of the people, adopted into a Crow family, and taken as sister by a Northern Cheyenne woman. Learning these spiritualities and cosmologies gradually reshaped Marya’s worldview, uniquely preparing her to study the scientific Universe Story and integrate its implications into her life.

She has a B.A. in English from Marian College, Indianapolis and has earned Masters Degrees in Creation Spirituality (Mundelein, Chicago) and in Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness. (California Institute of Integral Studies, San Francisco)

She lives at Prayer Lodge, a center serving Native American women. Passionate about changing human consciousness toward affection for the planet, she is writing a book that integrates her transformative experiences with Crow and Northern Cheyenne peoples with insights from the 13.7 billion year story of the universe.

Marya lives in a solar and wind powered home, heated and cooled by a geo-thermal system. She and her community compost, recycle, and are doing native prairie grass restoration. They would love to trade in their car for a good horse!
